If you have a nervous dog, you might be familiar with valerian and chamomile. But you may be missing a trick if you’ve never heard of oatstraw for dogs!

Oatstraw comes from the leaves and the stem of the oat plant, the common oat, Avena sativa. Harvested while the plant is still green, oatstraw has been used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages.

Oatstraw is rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, chromium and iron. It’s also rich in magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese and selenium.

A good source of vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 and B9 (folate), oastraw also contains protein and various amino acids. These include arginine, histidine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine and tryptophan.

So, rather surprisingly perhaps for such a humble plant, oatstraw, particulary oatstraw for dogs, has rather a lot going for it.

Perfectly safe for long-term use, oatstraw makes an excellent general tonic and calmative for dogs with a nervous and anxious disposition. It is also said to improve brain function, to help protect against heart disease, and to increase energy. So it’s also ideal for the more senior dog who is in need of a bit of a herbal lift. It’s also good for any dog who is under the weather for whatever reason, and it can also help with any dog suffering from seizures, canine epilepsy.

If you’ve never considered oatstraw as a herbal alternative to those two more famous herbs valerian and chamomile, I suggest you give it a try.

Simply sprinkle a teaspoon as a meal topper or mix into raw meat.
