Echinacea - Echinacea Spp
Echinacea is an immune supporting herb, supporting intact immune functions through stimulatory and strengthening actions at various levels within the body. It's effectiveness lies in a complex mix of compounds, including caffeic acids, volatile oils, polysaccharides and more. These compounds enhance Echinacea's ability to fight infections. Echinacea enhances disease resistance through various mechanisms:
- It accelerates phagocytosis at the blood level where macrophages and antibodies attack and remove bacteria.
- At cellular levels, it reduces the production of an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, promoting tighter cell binding during infections. This makes tissues less permeable to microbes, rendering invaders more susceptible to scavenging antibodies.
- It stimulates the lymph system, aiding the elimination of waste materials from tissues.
- It intervenes with bacteria at the point of invasion due to its antimicrobial qualities, contributing to the bodys fight against infection
EEchinace's effectiveness is supporting the immune system relies on a healthy immune system. For optimal results, it should be taken at the onset of infectious symptoms.
Despite the controversy concerning how long Echinacea can be used before the body builds a tolerance to it's immune stimulating actions, Echinacea is still widely recognised for its immune stimulating qualities and antimicrobial properties making it useful for mouth and urinary tract infections. It's also noted for its historical use as a snake bite remedy, relieving pain and swelling from insect bites when applied topically.
Echinacea is a very safe herb, but remember, Echinacea can only be expected to support a healthy immune system. If the animal is malnourished or immune compromised by pre-existing disease or by other factors, you should consider dietary changes and/or other measures that feed and support the immune system before jumping into Echinacea therapy.
Add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of leaves to a cup of hot water and allow to infuse for 2-3 minutes before straining and serving. Ensure the tea has cooled adequately before presenting it to your dog.
