Passionflower is a perennial vine with vibrant purple flowers. It is best known for its natural calming properties. This purple flower has been used for medicinal purposes for many years and is completely safe for dogs. If your dog suffers from anxiety, this is a natural remedy to ease their symptoms.
Most commonly used for relieving anxiety, passionflower can work wonders for your dog. It raises levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain. This will lower certain brain cell activity, putting the body in a calm and relaxed state. Passionflower also keeps levels of serotonin and dopamine high in the body. High levels of these neurotransmitters can increase your dog's mood and improve their temperament.
People often use passionflower if their dog suffers from separation anxiety in particular. Pet owners will give their dog passionflower before they have to leave them alone. It has even been used as a stress reliever before surgery. It can work just as well as other medications given in pre-op.
Just like with any other supplements, you should always consult with your vet first. Passionflower should not be used if your dog is taking any medication for their nervous system. It also can stimulate the uterus and isn’t compatible with dogs that are pregnant.
Add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of leaves to a cup of hot water and allow to infuse for 2-3 minutes before straining and serving. Ensure the tea has cooled adequately before presenting it to your dog.
