Licorice - Glycyrrhiza Glabra and G. Lepidota

Numerous studies have confirmed that licorice is a potent and fast-acting anti-inflammatory, often considered nature's answer to hydrocortisone. Its key component, glycyrrhizin, is structurally similar to natural corticosteroids, stimulating the adrenal glands and aiding conditions like Addison's disease.

Licorice provides anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunostimulant, and corticosteroid like actions, relieving pain, itching and inflammation without compromising the immune system. This makes it useful for various inflammatory diseases. Topically, licorice treats skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema and flea allergies.

Licorice is affective in treating and preventing liver disease, offering liver protectant qualities and stimulating interferon and T cell production.

In TCM, licorice aids liver detoxification and obstructive jaundice treatment. Licorice benefits the reticuloendothelial system, the body's defence against infection. It's also a demulcent, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant for the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tracts, healing stomach ulcers and reducing gastric acid secretions.

Licorice should not be used with reckless abandon or in normal doses for periods exceeding two weeks without the instruction of a qualified practitioner. If a licorice therapy does exceed two weeks then the treated animals diet should be adjusted to accommodate increased needs for potassium and to eliminate excess sodium. Dandelion leaf is well indicated here because it works as an effective diuretic to prevent water retention while providing an excellent source of supplemental potassium. Animals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions should not be given licorice without professional guidance.

Licorice may temporarily elevate blood sugar levels and should be used with caution in diabetic animals. It has also been shown to have estrogenic properties that may affect uterine functions. Therefore, licorice should be used with caution in pregnant or nursing animals.

Add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of leaves to a cup of hot water and allow to infuse for 2-3 minutes before straining and serving. Ensure the tea has cooled adequately before presenting it to your dog.
